Hocus Pocus 3 writer Jen D’Angelo teases the Disney sequel as well as wanting to bring back Hannah Waddingham.
After nearly thirty years since the release of the original movie, the Sanderson sisters returned for Hocus Pocus 2. The long-belated sequel was a huge hit for Disney+, so the studio naturally got the ball rolling on Hocus Pocus 3. Jen D’Angelo is returning to pen the script for Hocus Pocus 3 and teased that we could see more of Hannah Waddingham, who played the Mother Witch who gifted the young Sanderson sisters with their spell book.
“We’re still in the story phase, we’re still working on it,” D’Angelo told Entertainment Weekly. “We’ve been working on some ideas, and it’s been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore.” The writer added that she wants to expand on the character of the Mother Witch. “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch,” she said.
The writer said that while “anything’s on the table” for Hocus Pocus 3, she knows they “for sure want to see [the Sanderson sisters] again as adults.” Now that the WGA strike is over, the team is able to get back to work on the script. “I’m hoping that we are able to explore every aspect of these stories and take these characters on a bunch of fun adventures,” D’Angelo said. “3 is still very much in the early stages, we don’t really know what it is, but we’re exploring all options and I think everybody is so delighted by the reaction that Hocus Pocus 2 got, and we’re excited to continue those stories.“
“It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge,” reads the official Disney synopsis for Hocus Pocus 2. “Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.”
