Kelly Macdonald to lay down the law alongside Kyle Chandler for DC’s Lanterns series

Boardwalk Empire and The Radleys star Kelly Macdonald sees green as she joins the cast of HBO’s Lanterns series

Lanterns, Kelly Macdonald

By Green Lantern’s light, no evil shall escape Kelly Macdonald’s sight as she joins DC’s Lanterns series. Known for her starring role as Margaret Thompson in Boardwalk Empire, Carla Jean Moss in No Country for Old Men, and the voice of Merida in Disney’s Brave, Macdonald joins the series to play Sheriff Kerry, a “no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town.” Hardened by a complicated past, Sheriff Kerry answers the call when her community’s secrets start bubbling to the surface. While not confirmed, Sheriff Kerry may be a love interest for Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan.

Chris Mundy (Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive producer and will co-write the series alongside Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also executive produce. James Hawes, a prolific TV director best known for Black Mirror and Slow Horses, will helm the first two episodes.

The series “follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, said, “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”

After an extensive search, Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart for Lanterns. John Stewart is one of Earth’s Green Lanterns, the leader of the Green Lantern Corps, and a member of the organization’s Honor Guard. Stewart specializes in sharp-shooting and is a skilled architect, making the objects he manifests with his power ring intricate and multi-functioning.

Kelly Macdonald’s latest role is Helen Radley from Euros Lyn’s horror-comedy The Radleys. The disturbing tongue-in-cheek film follows a seemingly ordinary family with a dark secret: they are vampires. They choose not to drink blood despite their natural cravings, but their truth is revealed one day.

Lanterns is part of DC’s universe revamp after studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran sunsetted the DCEU. The Green Lantern property hasn’t had the best track record after Martin Campbell’s live-action adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds was laughed out of theaters. Green Lantern fans will be quick to judge the new series. Meanwhile, we’re hoping for the best.
