The official Padre Pio release date has been set in a new trailer. The upcoming Abel Ferrara film stars Shia LeBeouf in his return to acting.

When is the Padre Pio release date?

According to the latest trailer for the upcoming film, the Padre Pio release date is set for June 2, 2023. Gravitas Ventures has locked in the rights to the film.

LeBeouf stars in the film as the titular as Francesco Forgione, also known as Padre Pio. Forgione was an Italian Franciscan Capuchin friar infamous for allegedly experiencing stigmata.

Alongside LeBeouf, Padre Pio will also star Cristina Chiriac, Marco Leonardi, Asia Argento, Vincenzo Crea, Luca Lionello, Brando Pacitto, Stella Mastrantonio, and Salvatore Ruocco. The film is directed by Ferrera, with a script by Maurizio Braucci and Ferrara.

“It is the end of World War I and the young Italian soldiers are making their way back to San Giovanni Rotondo, a land of poverty, historic violence and the iron clad rule of the church and its wealthy landowners,” reads the official synopsis for the movie. “Families are desperate, the men are broken, but victorious. Padre Pio (Shia Labeouf) also arrives, to a remote Capuchin monastery, to begin his ministry evoking an aura of compelling charisma, saintliness and storied visions of Jesus, Mary and the Devil himself. The eve of the first free election in Italy sets the stage for an historic, and metaphoric massacre, an apocalyptic event, one that changes the course of the world.”

The film will be LeBeouf’s first major role since claims of sexual battery, assault, and numerous other allegations were made against the actor by artist and former significant other FKA Twigs. LeBeouf admitted in an appearance on Jon Bernthal’s podcast Real Ones that he had “hurt” FKA Twigs, while not going into too many specifics.

Following his role in Padre Pio, LeBeouf is also set to appear in Francis Ford Coppola’s 2024 film Megalopolis in some fashion.
