Director Jon M. Chu has shared some new details about Wicked: Part 2.
Wicked, which is directed by Chu, is now playing in United States theaters. The film is the first chapter in a two-part adaptation of the popular Broadway show of the same name. Wicked: Part 2 arrives in November 2025.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Chu shared some insight on what happens should expect out of the Wicked sequel.
What did Jon M. Chu say about Wicked: Part 2?
“If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences,” Chu said. ”Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn’t what you expect it to be. It can be lonely, it can be hard.”
He added, “There’s a lot of soul-searching in movie 2. They’re asking, ‘Is this the right decision that you made?’”
Chu — who also previously directed 2016’s Now You See Me 2, 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians, and 2021’s In the Heights, among other titles — noted that, while Wicked: Part 2 may be darker than the first movie, there will still be “lots of lightness in the movie.”
He continued, “There’s a lot of fun parts. We’ve not forgotten about that, but there’s a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity].”
The cast of both Wicked movies include Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, Ariana Grande as Glinda Upland, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, and Peter Dinklage as the voice of Doctor Dillamond.
Wicked: Part 2 will be released in United States theaters on November 21, 2025, from Universal Pictures.
