Why Netflix canceled Altered Carbon before Season 3
Netflix’s decision to cancel Altered Carbon Season 3 was due to the show’s viewership not being enough to justify its high production cost, Deadline reported.
Earlier, Netflix had put series like The Society and I Am Not Ok With This on the chopping block due to the coronavirus pandemic. The shows’ performances on the service herein weren’t the issue rather numerous factors fueled their cancellation. The factors were unclear production dates, budget increases, and scheduling conflicts of a larger cast. As these aspects weren’t manageable during the pandemic, the service saw the cancellation as the last escort. (via The Hollywood Reporter)
However, the pandemic didn’t lead to the cancellation of Altered Carbon Season 3. As per Deadline, the decision to scrap the third season was made a month after its Season 2 premiere. The series failed to meet the standard viewership numbers, and the high production costs associated with it led to the cancellation of Season 3.
Altered Carbon Season 2 witnessed a change in the main lead, with MCU actor Anthony Mackie taking over Joel Kinnaman’s role of Takeshi “Tak” Kovacs. This modification was made as the main character was re-sleeved in the finale of Season 1. Therefore, a need for a new actor emerged and this time it was Mackie.
Season 2 brings back Takeshi Kovacs, the last standing soldier in the team of interstellar soldiers, as he investigates numerous murders. He also embarks on a journey to find his lost love, Quellcrist Falconer. The two seasons premiered in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
