Zack Snyder has an idea for another Rebel Moon spinoff

Zack Snyder has an idea for another Rebel Moon spinoff focusing on the younger days of Balisarius, the tyrant in charge of the Imperium.

Rebel Moon, spinoff

It’s no secret that Zach Snyder has big plans for Rebel Moon. In addition to the two Netflix movies, Snyder is also planning an animated series, an animated comic, and a narrative podcast, and he told Entertainment Weekly that he also has an idea for a Rebel Moon spinoff focusing on the younger days of Balisarius.

Balisarius is the tyrant in charge of the Imperium, the military force featured in Rebel Moon. The role is played by Fra Fee, but fans might notice that Balisarius looks to be quite a bit older than the actor playing him; It turns out that’s all by design.

This hasn’t been confirmed, but I was hoping if there were ever a spinoff, like a TV show or something, about the younger days of Balisarius, that I would love a young actor to play that part. So we just aged him for this,” Snyder said. “Now I’m not saying that’s happening or that there’s even really discussions of that, but I think that he’s such a rich and interesting character and he’s such a great actor that the potential is really amazing. If the story were to continue past the two movies that we’ve made, his role would increase exponentially, as you can imagine.

Always thinking ahead. As Snyder mentioned, this potential Rebel Moon spinoff isn’t much more than a pipedream at this time, but it goes to show just how much development has been put into this universe. In fact, Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad has said that they’ve got hundreds of years of mythology mapped out. “The world is very, very detailed and fleshed out,” Johnstad said. “There’s hundreds and hundreds of pages of documents of methodology and mythology and lore. The timeline goes back 800 years, from our movies.” The Rebel Moon writers’ room contains a 12ft whiteboard with the timeline laid out, and Johnstad added that the two movies “are literally two or three inches of that entire 12-foot span.

Here’s the official logline for Rebel Moon: “When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire will be released on Netflix on December 22nd, followed by Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver on April 19, 2024. You can check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray right here, and be sure to let us know what you thought of the film as well!
