Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a potential Edge of Tomorrow 2, and director Doug Liman recently provided an update on the project.
Speaking to Empire ahead of his new film The Instigators’ release, Liman was asked about a sequel to the 2014 sci-fi cult classic. Liman said that there’s no real new information, but he continues to keep in touch with stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt on the project.
“No, we keep talking about it,” Liman said. “We love that world.”
Liman went on to joke that he thinks a sequel could happen even a decade later, noting the seven-year difference between James Cameron’s two Terminator films. “I don’t know how long Cameron took his Terminators,” Liman joked, “but at the time if felt like a long time.”
Liman also revealed that he and Tom Cruise recently rewatched the first film together, with Liman reflecting that the film was “really good” even all these years later.
What do we know about Edge of Tomorrow 2?
Liman initially planned to make a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow shortly after the first film was released; however, the project was delayed a number of times for various reasons.
In January 2024, Cruise partnered with Warner Bros. for a deal that will see him develop, produce, and lead both original and franchise films for the movie studio. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are hoping that Edge of Tomorrow 2 will be one of the projects Cruise works on. However, there’s been no official confirmation that the sequel is moving forward at this time.
