What Did Elton John Say About Fatherhood?

Elton John claimed entering into fatherhood later in his life and parenting two kids with his husband, David Furnish, is the “greatest thing” he has ever done. John recently talked to Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM Logo show, “Radio Andy,” and discussed why he stopped touring. The British music legend also shared how much being a dad to his two boys means to him. John and Furnish have been together for more than three decades now and welcomed their children via surrogacy in 2010 and 2013.

Elton John said this about being an older father

As a “later in life dad” to his kids, Elton John told Andy Cohen, “It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done or we’ve ever done.” John then added that while he has had an “amazing life,” an outstanding music career, and built a prodigious legacy, among other things, his sons and his husband are the most “important things” to him. Elaborating further, he stated that this was primarily the reason why he “came off the road.” The 77-year-old noted that he wanted to be “able to spend the latter part of my life being there for them.”

The singer and his husband, David Furnish, have been together for more than three decades now. Furnish, a filmmaker and former advertising executive, first met John at a mutual friend’s dinner party in 1993 and had their first date the day after, as reported by PEOPLE. The couple was in a civil partnership for nine years before tying the knot in 2014 after the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United Kingdom.

During his brief discussion with Andy Cohen, Elton John also applauded those who are gay and bring up kids in this world. The singer then reasoned how “there’s so many people that say it shouldn’t happen.” He continued, “Well, of course, it should happen.” He then assured Cohen, “I’m sure you’ve been a great dad,” referring to something he said earlier in the conversation.

The Grammy winner also had a message for other gay parents, saying, “It’s the greatest gift you could possibly have.” He further claimed that becoming a father is the best gift he has had in life and “wouldn’t swap it for anything.”

Elton John and David Furnish welcomed their sons, Zachary Furnish-John and Elijah Furnish-John, in 2010 and 2013 via the same surrogate.
