James Gunn Clarifies His Involvement in Max’s Creature Commandos Series

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has finally clarified his involvement in Max‘s long-awaited Creature Commandos series, which is expected to premiere on Thursday, December 5, 2024. This marks Gunn’s first TV show as part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters for his new DC Universe timeline.

“The series tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option,” reads the show’s official logline.

What did James Gunn say about Creature Commandos series?

On his Threads account, Gunn confirmed that he didn’t direct any episodes of the upcoming adult-animated series. However, he did supervise the voice recordings of the main cast.

“I’m also not director on Creature Commandos for the record,” Gunn wrote. “I only directed the primary actors voice recordings and oversaw the proceedings. Another group of talented folks directed the episodes, and Dean Lorey led the charge.”

Creature Commandos features the voices of Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot/Weasel, and Steve Agee as John Economos, with Viola Davis reprising Amanda Waller in animated form. The series is created and written by Gunn, based on the DC Comics team created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick. Gunn is also executive producing alongside Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register, with Rick Morales set as a supervising producer.
