Frank Ocean’s Movie to Star Taylor Russell, A24 & 2AM Not Involved

A new update on Frank Ocean‘s reported movie has been offered up, with Jeff Sneider reporting that Taylor Russell is in talks to star in the mysterious directorial debut for the superstar singer.

What do we know about Frank Ocean’s movie?

Sneider’s report mentions that the project, codenamed “Philly” as of now, is still in the works, with Russell attached to star in the project. Both Russell and Ocean are friends, and Ocean even licensed out his own music to the 2019 movie Waves, which starred Russell alongside Kevin Harrison Jr.

The report also mentions that both A24 and 2AM are no longer involved in the project. DiscussingFilm’s original report on the project being in development noted that both companies were attached as distributors. However, Sneider notes that A24 was not and “never was” involved in the making of the movie and that 2AM is simply no longer involved. Instead, the movie is being set as an independent production.

Russell has quickly blossomed into one of the most in-demand actors in all of Hollywood. After starring in Waves in 2019, Russell starred in the 2022 romantic horror film Bones and All, the 2023 comedy-drama Mother, Couch, and was a main star in the Netflix series Lost in Space. In 2025, she’ll star in the sci-fi thriller Hope, which is set to be directed by acclaimed South Korean director Na Hong-jin.

Ocean is best known for his critically acclaimed career as a musician. Often seen as the pioneer of the alternative R&B genre, Ocean is a two-time Grammy winner, with his last album, 2016’s Blonde, earning massive praise, with Rolling Stone ranking it on their list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
