Who’s ready to go back behind bars? In a surprise announcement, Deadline reports that Mayans M.C. co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner Elgin James is developing a new Prison Break project for Hulu. Written and executive-produced by James through his Sierra Drive studio, the revised version marks a new chapter of the incarceration thriller.

Elgin is keeping details about the new Prison Break project in solitary. However, Deadline says, “it is not expected to involve the characters who were at the center of the original series and its followups on Fox.” The original Prison Break debuted in 2005, following Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) as two brothers hatching a plan to escape Fox River State Penitentiary. With Lincoln heading for Death Row, it’s only a matter of time before push comes to shove, and the brothers must enact their plan or face the consequences of their actions. Along the complicated journey, the brothers recruit other inmates to facilitate their escape, played by Amaury Nolasco, Sarah Wayne Callies, Paul Adelstein, Rockmond Dunbar, Inbar Lavi, Mark Feuerstein, Robert Knepper, and Augustus Prew.

Prison Break aired for four seasons on Fox, followed by a made-for-TV film titled The Final Break, airing 12 days after the Season 4 finale to put a bow on the events. In 2015, Miller and Purcell reunited for a Prison Break limited series, serving as a fifth season of the intense drama. Fox tried to revive Prison Break on multiple occasions, but nothing ever came of it. In 2020, Wentworth Miller announced he was no longer interested in playing Michael Scofield, saying, as a gay man, he has no desire to play heterosexual characters.

Fox‘s Prison Break debuted to rave reviews from audiences and critics, with many praising the show’s clever twists, layered characters, nail-biting cliffhangers, and brilliant pacing. Each season saw new wrinkles to Michael’s plan, with everyone from corrections officers to rival inmates throwing a wrench into the works.
