Chris McKay reveals plot details on The Lego Batman Movie 2, the sequel we’ll never get to see after Lego ended its deal with Warner Bros.

Lego Batman sequel, Chris McKay

After the critical and commercial success of The Lego Batman Movie, Warner Bros. was quick to get the ball rolling on a sequel. Chris McKay would have returned to direct lego batman 2, but the project was canceled when Lego ended its partnership with Warner Bros. and signed with Universal instead.

While speaking with Uproxx, Chris McKay dropped a few details on the lego batman sequel that we’ll never get to see. “We had a really fun script with Dan Harmon and Michael Waldron, wrote a really fun kind of Superfriends,McKay said. “The sequel would’ve been a quasi Superfriends movie and the structure was going to be a sort of Godfather II kind of thing with Batman and the Justice League facing a modern-day problem, Lex Luthor and OMAC, while at the same time flashing back to the reasons why Batman and the Justice League – and in particular, Superman – have bad blood.”

McKay continued: “It was going to explore Superman and Batman’s relationship in a very different way than you’ve ever seen it portrayed, including Superman’s alienation from humanity and how hard it is to truly be friends, real friends, for years. It was ultimately going to answer the question: How do you become Great-friends. And there was going to be a crossover with a major franchise that can only happen in a LEGO movie.” The Lego Batman Movie starred Will Arnett as Batman alongside Zach Galifianakis as the Joker, Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred.

While Chris McKay may never have gotten to give us lego batman 2, his next project still looks like a lot of fun… albeit not of the family variety. McKay helmed Renfield, a horror comedy starring Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, the long-suffering servant of Dracula, and Nicholas Cage as the legendary vampire. The movie finds Renfield finding a new lease on life in modern-day New Orleans when he falls in love with Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina), a traffic cop, and decides to finally stand up to his creator in the hope of finally breaking free. Renfield will hit theaters on April 14th.
