During a recent interview with Variety, Oscar winner Emma Stone shared an update regarding the current development status of Disney’s highly-anticipated Cruella 2. Stone also expressed her desire to work on the sequel.
“Hopefully sooner, rather than later,” Stone said. “There’s a work in progress kind of thing going on. Yeah, yeah. We’ll see… She’s a blast, so we’ll see.”
What was Cruella about?
The synopsis for Cruella reads: “Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.”
The first installment was directed by I, Tonya filmmaker Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara. It also starred Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mark Strong, John McCrea, and Emily Beecham. It was executive produced by Stone and original Cruella actress Glenn Close, with Michelle Wright, Jared LeBoff, Andrew Gunn, Marc Platt, and Kristin Burr producing.
Since the film debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic, it had a simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ with Premier Access release. During its theatrical run, Cruella garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences, who praised the film’s costume design, music, and direction. It earned a gross of over $230 million at the worldwide box office.
