Godzilla x Kong team up in first look at The New Empire

The first trailer has arrived for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, pitting the giant monsters against a new threat.

Godzilla and King Kong are back and they are some of the angriest lizards and simians you’re ever gonna find! Just a few days after we got one of the coolest posters of the year, the first trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has arrived out of CCXP in Brazil.

While I personally felt 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong was a letdown in terms of spectacle (look, I found Toho’s version to be far more fun), Godzilla x Kong looks like a strong follow-up, especially since fans of the MonsterVerse will be getting a new giant monster to face off against. Expansion has always been key in the Godzilla universe, so the addition will no doubt be a plus here.

They also released the new one-sheet:

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire “follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the fifth movie in the MonsterVerse, following 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and the aforementioned Godzilla vs. Kong.

Although originally slated for a March release, Godzilla x Kong will hit theaters on April 12th. Next year notably marks the 70th(!) anniversary of the original Godzilla, which spawned one of the longest film franchises ever. The latest installment of the core movies, Godzilla Minus One has been the most overwhelmingly favored entry to date, holding a 97% critic score and a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. We have to wonder, though, between the “minus” and the “x” in these titles, what’s up with all of the math…?
