Imtiaz Ali Reacts to Love Aaj Kal & Jab Harry Met Sejal’s Box Office Failure

Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali is known for his distinctive narrative style in the industry. Over the years, he has given us unforgettable movies like Jab We Met, Rockstar, Highway, Tamasha, and many more. His latest release, Amar Singh Chamkila, which was released on Netflix, has also received positive reviews. However, some of his films like Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal (2020) did not receive as much love from the audience.

In a recent interview, Ali candidly addressed the lukewarm response these films received at the box office. In the same interview, Imtiaz Ali shared his introspective views on the outcome of these films and his future in cinema.

All my films have had some problems in execution’: Imtiaz Ali

In a candid discussion with HT City, Ali expressed his reflections on the making and reception of these movies. “When I made them, I just wanted to make a movie, but they didn’t work. All my films have had some problems in execution; [I feel] they could have been better,” Ali remarked. Despite the commercial setbacks, the 52-year-old director holds an optimistic view about the future reception of these films. He further believes that they might be appreciated more as time passes.

Ali also expressed his intention to avoid being stereotyped as a maker of intellectual cinema. “I don’t want my films to come across as intellectual. If they do, they might seem restrictive, and I don’t want them to belong to an exclusive crowd. I would love to make a masala film, but I just don’t know how to make it as I can’t help but be myself,” he explained.

As Imtiaz Ali continues to explore new themes and formats, his audience remains eager for the next chapter of his cinematic journey, irrespective of the genre he chooses to dabble in next.
