Is It an Original Story or Based on a Book?

3 Body Problem just recently dropped on Netflix, and viewers are wondering if this new sci-fi series is an original story or based on a book. Here is your answer.

Is 3 Body Problem an original story or based on a book?

3 Body Problem is based on a book called The Three-Body Problem.

The new Netflix series 3 Body Problem is based on the Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu. The Three-Body Problem is the first novel in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy. The book was originally published in 2008 and later republished in English in 2014.

The story of The Three-Body Problem is set against the backdrop of a Chinese Cultural Revolution, wherein a secret military project sends signals into space to contact aliens. Consequently, this results in an alien civilization on the brink of destruction capturing the signal. Moreover, they begin making plans to invade Earth.

On Earth, different camps start forming. One camp is in favor of welcoming the aliens to help them take over what they see as a corrupt planet. The other camp, meanwhile, is fighting against the invasion.

The main narrative of the novel revolves around Ye Wenjie. The character is an astrophysicist who witnessed her father’s death in China in 1967, and was sent to prison later after being branded a traitor.

Ye Wenjie is later recruited by Yang Weining and Lei Zhicheng. This is on account of her scientific background to help locate extraterrestrial life.

The Three-Body Problem novel was followed by the novels The Dark Past and Death’s End. The Dark Past was published in the same year as The Three-Body Problem novel, and Death’s End was published two years later in 2010.

The 3 Body Problem series, currently streaming on Netflix, was created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. The cast includes Rosalind Chao, Benedict Wong, Jovan Adepo, Eiza Gonzalez, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, Alex Sharp, and Jess Hong.
