Talk to Me directors have already filmed a prequel

Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou have already shot a prequel that centers on the Duckett character

A few days ago, we shared a snippet of a Hollywood Reporter interview with Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at THIS LINK, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above), in which they said they wouldn’t be able to resist making a sequel if they are given the opportunity. Now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed an even more exciting bit of news: the Philippou brothers have already filmed a prequel to Talk to Me!

Talk to Me features a character named Duckett, played by Sunny Johnson – and when The Hollywood Reporter directly asked the Philippous if they have been talked about making a Duckett prequel, Danny answered, “We actually shot an entire Duckett prequel already. It’s told entirely through the perspective of mobile phones and social media, so maybe down the line we can release that. But also while writing the first film, you can’t help but write scenes for a second film. So there’s so many scenes. The mythology was so thick…

The directors didn’t mention how long this prequel is, so it might turn out to be a short that could be released as an extra on the Talk to Me home video release. We’ll have to wait and see. But it’s very interesting to hear that some sort of prequel is already in existence.

Talk to Me has the following synopsis: When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.

Sophia Wilde (You Don’t Know Me), Miranda Otto (Annabelle: Creation), Alexandra Jensen (Frayed), Joe Bird (First Day), Otis Djanji (Aquaman), and Zoe Terakes (Wentworth) star.

This marks the feature debut of the Philippou brothers, who already had a following of over 6 million subscribers on their YouTube channel RackaRacka. A24 gave Talk to Me a theatrical release this past weekend – and while the movie was expected to draw in around 4 to 5 million, it actually exceeded expectations and had an opening weekend of $10 million. A good start for a movie that had a budget of $4.5 million.

As for what’s next: beyond the sequel and prequel talk, the Philippou brothers have signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise, they have an action drama project they’d like to make, and they also have a horror script called Bring Her Back that they want to bring to the screen.
