What Happened to Jay Cutler? DUI Arrest Explained

Sports fans are concerned about Jay Culter, a former NFL quarterback, after he was arrested for a DUI in Franklin, Tennessee. As reported by local news outlet WSMV, the 41-year-old Culter was taken into custody on Thursday, October 18, just before 7 PM CDT by the Franklin Police Department. Over his 12-year NFL career, Cutler was a quarterback for the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, and Miami Dolphins. Here are more details on Jay Cutler’s DUI arrest and how the accident happened.

Why was former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler arrested?

Jay Cutler was arrested for a DUI and faces three additional charges including failure to exercise due care, implied consent, and possessing a gun while intoxicated.

Officers with the Franklin Police Department responded to reports of a crash with a white Dodge Ram and a blue GMC at around 5 PM. According to an affidavit by the owner of the GMC, Cutler rear-ended him, attempted to flee the scene, and tried to bribe him with a $2,000 offer not to call the police. The GMC driver also said he suffered a back injury from the accident but refused treatment at the scene, choosing to drive himself to the hospital for treatment.

The Franklin PD reports that officers smelled alcohol coming from Cutler and detected that he had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes. He also refused to take a field sobriety test, which is why he was charged with implied consent. In Tennessee, any person driving a motor vehicle in the state is deemed to have given implied consent for a breath test, a blood test, or both to determine the person’s alcohol or drug content of their blood.

As for the gun possession charge, the officers also found two firearms in Cutler’s vehicle, a rifle and a loaded Glock pistol.

After being booked in the Williamson County Jail, Cutler was given a $5,000 bond and was released at 10:00 PM later that evening.
