Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spoilers are inevitably being hunted down by impatient Marvel fans, and while we don’t know exactly what happens in James Gunn’s MCU swansong just yet, we do know a whole bunch of GotG 3 story and plot details.
The final installment in the James Gunn-directed trilogy will conclude the storyline of the most unlikely band of superheroes, whose adventures started with 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and developed over six Marvel Cinematic Universe entries (seven if you also count Thor: Love & Thunder ). The titular heroes went through many adventures over the years, with some of the Guardians turned to dust during the Snap caused by Thanos (Josh Brolin). Recently, they helped Thor (Chris Hemsworth) defeat the Booskans in the battle of Indigarr before kidnapping Kevin Bacon to cheer up Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), aka Star-Lord, roughly in MCU’s 2024.
All Guardians of the Galaxy 3 spoilers we know so far
The upcoming nearly two-and-a-half hours long Vol. 3 will mainly focus on Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), whom Gunn called “the secret protagonist” of the whole trilogy. The trailer teased Rocket was a test subject for High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), attempting to create the perfect weapon through genetic engineering and experimentation before becoming a mercenary and joining the Guardians. The third movie will explain most of what happened to the crew. In addition to Rocket, the story will also delve into Nebula’s (Karen Gillan) transformation into a fellow hero, among other things.
What’s GotG 3’s story about?
The story will take place after the events of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which revealed Star-Lord and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) are half-siblings as their father is the Celestial known as Ego the Living Planet, whose mission was to impregnate many alien species and take over the universe with his offspring before being defeated by the Guardians in Vol. 2. He’s also responsible for the death of Peter’s mom, Meredith.
More troubles are on the horizon for the Guardians, who now operate from Knowhere after buying it from Vol. 1 villain, the Collector. High Evolutionary will serve as the main bad guy, but Vol. 3 will also officially introduce Adam Warlock in the MCU after the character’s birth out of a cocoon in the post-credits scene for Vol. 2. It’s still unclear what Warlock’s role in Vol. 3 holds, but it seems he will help the Sovereign continue their hunt for the Guardians.
Are Thor, Cosmo, and Gamora in GotG 3?
With Thor leaving the team, new members are joining the Guardians, including Cosmo the Spacedog. In the upcoming movie, the telekinesis-powered dog will be voiced by Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’s Maria Bakalova. The Holiday Special teased there was a special connection between him and Rocket, and Vol. 3 is expected to follow up on his relationship with Rocket. In addition to Cosmo, the movie will feature new animals, including a furry f’saki called Blurp.
The upcoming movie will also see the return of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), who didn’t show up on the Holiday Special. The Guardians member was sacrificed by Thanos to obtain the Soul Stone in Avengers: Infinity War, but her 2014 self jumped back to the MCU present when the heroes traveled in time to defeat Thanos and prevent the Snap. The younger Gamora doesn’t have any recollection of her adventures with the Guardians since they never went down in her timeline. The bulked Groot version from the Holiday Special is also back and has a knack for shooting. Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar Ogord and the Ravagers will be in the film in some capacity.
Does anyone die in GotG 3?
For many characters returning, there are also a few who will depart. Flight. 3 will be the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie with Gunn behind the camera. Plus, different actors have expressed their disinterest in resuming their characters beyond Vol. 3, like Dave Bautista. This has caused some to speculate that Drax could wind up dying in the third film, or that it might even be the end of Rocket, given the film’s focus on him.
The trailer also heavily implies some will “fly off together into the sunset.” At the moment, Vol. 3 seems the final goodbye to the Guardians as fans get to know them, but Pratt wants to reprise Star-Lord in other MCU works. While he believes there’s mileage left in the character, it’s unclear whether or not he will get the chance to.
