Being one of the brightest minds in the company, she also took over from Sam Altman briefly after his exit in late 2023. Mira Murati recently announced her exit from OpenAI in a detailed post shared on her X (formerly Twitter) handle on September 26. In the post, she revealed that after careful consideration she has decided to step down from her Chief Technology Officer position. Initially, she extended her thanks to individuals who allowed her to be a part of this extraordinary journey at OpenAI.
“My six-and-a-half years with the OpenAI team have been an extraordinary privilege. While I’ll express my gratitude to many individuals in the coming days, I want to start by thanking Sam and Greg for their trust in me to lead the technical organization and for their support throughout the years.” Moreover, she believed it to be the right time to leave the company and reflect on the technological advancements made throughout her tenure.
She cited her reason for exit as making space and time for exploration. However, for now, she is focused on seamlessly departing the organization. She ended without expressing gratitude for the opportunity.
Murati’s departure from OpenAI likely stems from recent organizational shakeups that have led to prominent leadership exits. Last year, Open AI’s board members decided to make Altman step down from the CEO position. This happened after members went through a review process, finding inconsistency in Sam Altman‘s ability to communicate transparently with board members.
