Sherlock Holmes 3 Remains a ‘Priority’ for Robert Downey Jr.

It has been over a decade since Warner Bros. started developing Sherlock Holmes 3and now producer Susan Downey has finally addressed the long-gestated project.

In a recent interview with The Wrap, Downey, along with producing partner Amanda Burell, confirmed that there is still a possibility that the third installment to the blockbuster action period franchise will be made in the near future. She also shared that they recently had a conversation regarding the project, which she described as a “priority” for the company and lead star Robert Downey Jr.

“Well, here’s what I can tell you. And Amanda can attest to this. Prior to this, we had lunch together with Robert, the three of us. And it was a very specific topic of conversation,” Susan Downey revealed. “So yes, it is in the hopper. We’re going to do it when it’s right, with the right people, but it is a priority for the company and a priority for Robert.”

While there was no indication of when said right time may be, Downey assured fans that she and Burell “really push, push, push” on prospective projects, always considering “what can we do next?”

Sherlock Holmes 3 was first announced in 2011, with writers Drew Pearce, Justin Haythe, Nicole Perlman, and Chris Brancato previously attached to the project at different points of the pre-production stage. In 2019, Rocketman filmmaker Dexter Fletcher signed on to the project to replace Guy Ritchie as the director. The long-in-development third installment is expected to feature the return of Downey Jr. as the titular investigator and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson.

The first two films were directed by Ritchie. The franchise currently has a combined gross of over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. It featured appearances from Mark Strong, Rachel McAdams, Kelly Reilly, Noomi Rapace.
