Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom: trailer revealed at CinemaCon

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’s much-anticipated trailer premiered at CinemaCon, hinting at a much reduced role for Amber Heard’s Mera.

While this year’s CinemaCon was buzzing with rumors that not only is The Flash good but that it might be one of the best superhero movies ever – another anticipated DC movie made some waves: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. While it’s not getting buzz on the level of The Flashand rumors have abounded about reshoots, the extent of Amber Heard’s role as Mera and more, co-DC Studios head Peter Safran seemed enthusiastic about the Aquaman sequel. Let’s not forget how the original was one of the highest-grossing DC movies ever.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director James Wan didn’t attend CinemaCon in person but sent a video greeting. He teased that the movie revolves around a bromance between Patrick Wilson’s Orm and Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman. We saw the first trailer, which revealed more of the premise. In it, Aquaman is now a father juggling being a dad to a newborn on land and a king under the sea. But who is the mother, you may ask? It seems likely to be Amber Heard’s Mera, who is present in the trailer but only in tiny, fleeting glimpses (Nicole Kidman’s Atlanna is more of a presence). While I have no idea how extensive her role is, my theory is that she dies early on and that her death leads to him approaching Wilson’s Orm for help once the significant threat is revealed. I could be dead wrong though.

This significant threat is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, who now wields the Black Trident, which is powered by evil energy destroying the part of the planet on land. He and Wilson seem well-suited to the new direction, with Wilson looking like he spent the years between films living in a gym, as he’s shredded like never before. This looks like the Tango & Cash of superhero films, and I’m here for it.
