Cobie Smulders teases Marvel’s Secret Invasion series is darker than previous projects and it’s hard to know how to trust.
Cobie Smulders first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Maria Hill in The Avengersbut she’s finally set to take a main role in the Secret Invasion series.
Secret Invasion will find Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role of Nick Fury as he investigates a conspiracy involving the Skrulls, a species of shape-shifting aliens first introduced in Captain Marvel. While speaking with People, Cobie Smulders teased the series, saying that Secret Invasion is “much more dark in tone than ones previous. It’s hard to know who to trust.“Smulders continued,”Secret Invasion shows us insight into the lives of agents working to keep Earth and its inhabitants safe. Now, there is a major discovery of the Skrulls. Maria has been trying to get Nick Fury back to Earth to help with a multitude of problems but when the Skrulls become public knowledge, it finally gets his attention.“
Following Cobie Smulders’ appearance in The Avengersshe returned for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgameand Spider-Man: Far From Homemore Agents of SHIELD and Marvel’s What If…?aim Secret Invasion gives her the chance to expand the character in ways she hasn’t been able to. “It’s been an absolute dream to play Maria Hill for the last 10 years,” Smulders said. “She is a fantastic, multi-layered character who has triumphed over some intense moments in Marvel history…. We are able to spend more time with characters and get to know their backstories and deepen their relationships.“
In addition to Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders, Secret Invasion also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Martin Freeman. Secret Invasion will also include Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, and the actor recently teased that the series feels more like a spy thriller than the typical Marvel project. “It speaks to the elasticity of what the MCU can be,” he said. “This one feels much closer to a movie like Bourne Identity or something that’s more along the tone of a ’70s movie. It’s not as much about the bells and whistles of big special effects. It’s more about the intrigue and drama, the espionage and double-crosses. And I still think it fits perfectly with what the MCU is able to do and pull off.” Secret Invasion will debut on Disney+ on June 21st.
