Dog War comes from director Andrew Abrahams, who also produced the project alongside Janette Warren. Lynn Rosa and Daniel E. Catullo III are attached as executive producers on the project. In a statement on the movie, Abrahams called the project a “challenging” six-year project that involved trying to remain as unbiased as possible.
“One challenge was keeping up with and not getting in the way of the team trying to infiltrate these “farms” and wet markets to rescue the captive dogs,” said Abrahams in a statement. “Another challenge was to take great care in allowing the conversations and debate about the issue without a heavy-handed or moralizing approach. Throughout, we were right by our subjects’ side as they risked their own safety to make a difference for the dogs.”
“Dog War follows a duo of war-hardened, canine-loving combat veterans fighting to stop the dog meat trade in South Korea,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Surveilling and infiltrating hidden meat farms and markets, they risk it all to save as many dogs as possible. At the same time, the film spotlights a country at war with itself over the issue, igniting questions about cultural difference, and social and generational change. Dog War probes these questions without simple black and white answers—about animal rights vs. human livelihood, heroism vs. vigilantism, respect for another culture, and how far we can justly go to save man’s best friend.”
