He may not be right for John Marston, but Jack Black still thinks a Red Dead Redemption movie could work, even more so than The Last of Us.
As John Marston once said, “You see a man whose character changed. I see a man who got found out for who he really was.” And the man Jack Black really was is someone who is eager to see a movie adaptation of the western-adventure game Red Dead Redemption.
Speaking with BBC, Black said a number of acclaimed video games are deserving of adaptations, but Rockstar’s massively successful series stands above most of the competition. “There are some great games that have yet to be explored in television or film. Maybe there’s going to be a Red Dead Redemption movie? There should be, because I think that [has] just as good or [an] even better story than The Last of Us.” But before you get sucked into a Jack Blackhole, the actor is still a huge fan of HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic game. “The Last of Us was fantastic. And what’s crazy is how loyal it is to the original source material. It’s basically all from the game with just a couple of tweaks. It’s going to win all the awards…They used the video game almost like a storyboard and I was like, ‘Whoa, this looks just the same.’”
Jack Black isn’t the only one who thinks a Red Dead Redemption movie is a good idea. Henry Cavill previously said it’s ripe for an adaptation. And now that his schedule has freed up a bit, we could picture him as the Wild West protagonist. But considering how long the game takes, maybe a miniseries would be best?
Of course, Jack Black has his own video game adaptation to focus on right now, as he’s currently promoting Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. movie, in which he voices main baddie Bowser to great effect, with even some musical numbers thrown in. That movie is expected to have a major opening, setting up an inevitable sequel that will surely be on screens before a Red Dead Redemption movie.
