The Mickey 17 release date has once again been delayed.
Warner Bros. announced today that the Bong Joon Ho-directed film had been pushed back and will no longer be released on January 31, 2025, as planned. It’s the latest delay for the sci-fi drama, which had been planned for a release on March 29, 2024. In totality, the delays add up to over a year.
What is the new Mickey 17 release date?
The new Mickey 17 release date is now set for April 18, 2025. That’s just over a two-month delay, although it does move the film out of January, which isn’t generally a promising sign in terms of quality. The film takes the spot of Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic, which was also recently delayed, and it is now the biggest film release on Easter weekend. It will still play in Imax.
“From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, Mickey 17,” says the synopsis. “The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.”
The Mickey7 novel, which the film is based on centers around an Expendable, which the synopsis describes as “a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous — even suicidal — the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal … and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.”
This marks Pattinson’s first project following the successful theatrical release of The Batman, which saw his debut as DC’s newest version of the Dark Knight. He will reprise his role as the superhero in the forthcoming sequel.
