Rachel McAdams absent from Mean Girls reunion

Fans of Mean Girls were robbed of a true reunion, as Rachel McAdams is noticeably absent from a recent Walmart commercial.

Mean Girls reunion

Rachel McAdams is apparently not interested in making “fetch” happen, and she is one of the core Mean Girls cast members to not return for a recent Black Friday ad for Walmart. Now who doesn’t even go here?

Nearly 20 years after Mean Girls was released, Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners) and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith) reunited in the name of good deals and, yes, pink. But Rachel McAdams, who played leader of The Plastics Regina George (whose hair may also be insured for $10,000), was noticeably absent, taking away so much from the reunion and instead bringing most of the attention back to her. Wait, was this a meta Regina George move…?

Still, the ad (which you can watch here) does have plenty of nods and easter eggs to Mean Girls, in addition to showing how Cady, Gretchen and Karen all turned out: Cady has become a guidance counselor, Karen has become a professional weather reporter and Gretchen has turned into the sort of stage mom that plays off of Amy Poehler’s character (she played Regina’s mom, which almost makes us feel like the part was planned for her). We also get cameos from Daniel Franzese’s Damian and Rajiv Surendra’s Kevin, who tells his son, “Don’t let the haters stop you from doin’ your thang, Kevin Jr.” Even Missy Elliot turns up, having had a song featured on the soundtrack.

There are other fun plays on some of Mean Girls’ best moments: wearing pink on Wednesdays, the Christmas dance and more. There are some twists on the more iconic lines, too, with “Get in, loser, we’re going shopping” replaced with “Get in, sweetie, we’re going deal shopping!”

Interestingly, Rachel McAdams had been open for a Mean Girls reunion if something could have been worked out to incorporate herself, Lohan, Chabert, and Seyfried in the movie musical. And while this commercial does a pretty good job at working in the characters and fan favorite moments, maybe this just isn’t her idea of a true reunion. Hey, maybe Lindsay Lohan can get a proper Mean Girls 2 going the way she’s been pushing another Freaky Friday?
