Insidious: The Red Door scared away the competition at the box office, raking in an impressive $32.65 million domestically and $31.4M overseas for a solid $64M worldwide opening. According to Deadline, that’s the best horror film debut since 2019 and the second-best start for the Insidious franchise domestically after Chapter 2’s $40.2M opening in 2013.
Unfortunately, Insidious’ rise cut deep into Indiana Jones’ pockets. Dial of Destiny, which opened lower than expected, dipped -56% in its sophomore frame, resulting in $26.5M, or about on par with No Time to Die (-57%). Indy V has accrued $121.2M domestically and $248M worldwide, which would be suitable for an average film — just not a $300M+ Indiana Jones film. Remember, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finished with $317M domestically and $473M internationally or $790M worldwide. Dial of Destiny isn’t touching those numbers.
On a positive note for Disney, Elemental is showing solid legs. Domestically, the pic has earned $107.9M after an $8.4M (-31%) take in weekend four. Internationally, the film has gained traction and raised its total to $142.7M with a worldwide gross of $252M. Not bad for a pic many (including myself) pegged a box office bomb a few weeks back. It’s still not amazing, mind you. Elemental still trails The Good Dinosaur by roughly $80M and likely won’t come anywhere near the likes of Toy Story 2 ($511M), WALL-E ($532M), or Brave ($554M), but at least it passed Onward ($133M) and Lightyear ($218M).
Of course, the huge news is the surprise success of Sound of Freedom. The Angel Studios film starring Jim Caviezel grossed $16.9M over the weekend and has hauled in a terrific $38.9M through its first six days. Those are impressive numbers for a pic that cost just $14.5M, per the Wall Street Journal.
