Where Is It Set, Filmed & Shot?

Fans of Penelope, the captivating coming-of-age drama series starring Megan Stott, are curious about the show’s filming locations. The series takes viewers to scenic locations in nature and is mainly set in a lush green forest. This is where the series protagonist, a 16-year-old girl, escapes after running away from home, leading to a journey of self-discovery.

So, let’s explore the filming locations that have significantly contributed to Penelope’s visual experience.

Where was Netflix’s Penelope filmed?

Netflix’s Penelope was filmed at various locations across the wilderness of the American state of Washington.

In a recent interview with the Seattle Times, Mel Eslyn, the producer of Penelope, revealed that a key aim of the series is to highlight lesser-known spots in Washington. She said: “Usually, people come and shoot and they want to show Seattle downtown. Or they want to shoot in Vancouver and then cut in the Space Needle in the background somewhere. But there’s so much more here, so the minute I got the yes, I didn’t look back. I was, like, ‘We’re doing this.’ We’re figuring this out.”

Notable filming locations include:

  • Snoqualmie, Washington: Episode 1 features the Black Dog Cafe, where Penelope meets Sam. This location showcases the city life she leaves behind.
  • Ashford, Washington: The production team filmed the Cascade National Park scenes at Mount Rainier National Park.
  • Index, Washington: The town featured in Episode 8 provides a peaceful backdrop as Penelope re-enters civilization and reflects on her journey.
  • Skykomish, Washington: In this stunning setting, Penelope navigates her future after rejecting the social worker’s assistance from the hospital. This town is also where the Cascade Library becomes the site of Penelope’s heartbreaking realization regarding her parents.

Where is Netflix’s Penelope set?

Penelope is set in Washington, U.S.A.

While the aforementioned locations were used for Season 1 of the series, Mel Eslyn revealed that the second season could explore more of the state of Washington. That is, of course, if the series is renewed.

In the same interview with the Seattle Times, Eslyn said, “I’m really hoping that this can be a jumping-off point for more stuff. If enough people watch this on Netflix, then maybe we get a second season and I can bring that back here.”

The show’s elite cast includes Megan Stott, Austin Abrams, Krisha Fairchild, and Rhenzy Feliz. All episodes of Penelope Season 1 are now available to stream online via Netflix.
