The feline-eating, troublesome alien from the planet Melmac named ALF — an acronym for Alien Life Form — sets its return to TV (and on Earth) on July 29. This is thanks in large part to Ryan Reynolds and George Dewey-owned production company Maximum Effort.
The Canadian-American actor and producer will revive the classic sitcom, which ran on NBC from 1986 to 1990. Airing under the channel’s “Maximum Moments” series, the all-day marathon will include episodes of the sitcom. This coincides with the release of Podcats: The Pawdcast — a Maximum Effort original following three cats as “expurrts” running down “impurrtant events.”
“At Maximum Effort, we love taking risks and blurring the lines between shows and sponsorship because we believe both can be equally entertaining,” said Reynolds. “Besides my irrational love of ALF growing up, one of the reasons we licensed this show was precisely because Paul, Shout! Studios and our intrepid brand partners wanted to plot with us to bring ALF back to life. Tune in this Caturday!”
The Fuzzy Alien is an ’80s Cultural Icon
Created by Paul Fusco and Tom Patchett, with Fusco serving as the voice for ALF, the comedy series centers on the extraterrestrial creature as he crash lands on the Tanner family’s basement, where the creature is offered a place to stay until it finishes repairing its spacecraft. However, seemingly ungrateful, ALF constantly attempts to eat the family’s house cat while making obnoxious remarks about humanity.
In addition to Fusco as the titular alien, the ALF cast members also include Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson, Benji Gregory, and Jim J. Bullock as the rest of the Tanner family. Rounding out the cast are John LaMotta, Liz Sheridan, Josh Blake, Anne Meara, and Bill Daily, among others.
