What else do we know about the live-action Moana movie?
The script for the new Moana movie is written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Kail is making his narrative feature directorial debut with the film, which additionally stars Frankie Adams as Sina and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
“Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania,” the synopsis for the 2016 movie reads. “But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped — and no one knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, a sweeping film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Some flashing lights sequences or patterns may affect photosensitive viewers.”
The live-action Moana remake will be released in United States theaters on July 10, 2026, from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The sequel to Moana, Moana 2, meanwhile arrives on November 27, 2024.
