Kiefer Sutherland stars in trailer for The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, the final movie from legendary director William Friedkin.
Legendary director William Friedkin died last month, but he left one final movie for us to enjoy. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial debuted at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, and Showtime has now released the first trailer for the legal drama.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Herman Wouk, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial follows a U.S. naval first officer who’s standing trial for orchestrating a mutiny after his captain shows signs of becoming unhinged and jeopardizes the lives of his crew. The film stars Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Clarke, Jake Lacy, Monica Raymund, Lewis Pullman, Jay Duplass, Tom Riley, and the late Lance Reddick.
“Barney Greenwald, a skeptical lawyer, reluctantly defends an officer of the navy who took control of the Caine from its captain, Lt. Philip Francis Queeg (Kiefer Sutherland), while caught in a violent sea storm,” reads the official description. “As the court-martial proceeds, however, Greenwald increasingly questions if it was truly a mutiny or rather the courageous acts of a group of sailors who could not trust their unstable leader.” William Friedkin wrote and directed the movie, with Guillermo del Toro standing by as his backup director during production.
The original version of the story took during World War II, but William Friedkin gave the story a contemporary spin. “The original piece was written for WWII, and Wouk included all the pent-up anger in this country over Pearl Harbor,” Friedkin told Deadline in 2022. “I’ve updated it so that is no longer Pearl Harbor. I’ve made it contemporary, involving the Gulf of Hormuz and the Straits of Hormuz, leading to Iran.” Friedkin also knew that Kiefer Sutherland was the man to star. “I think he is one of the best actors in America, one of the very best,” Friedkin said. “I saw every episode of his show 24. I thought he was just great but that he could do a lot more, and this gives him an opportunity to stretch.“
The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial will premiere on streaming and VOD for all Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers on October 6th. It will also make its on-air debut on Showtime on October 8th at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
